Abstract :
Local governments have important roles in Turkey in order to get larger share of fast growing tourism in the world, to increase the number of tourists and the amount of tourism revenues, to develop its domestic and international tourism. If local governments may not be aware of their roles, Turkey may lose its coming decades in the name of tourism and skip the target of being one of the largest ten economies in the world by 2023. This study examines the duties and responsibilities of local governments to develop tourism, to contribute both local and national development. The importance of cooperation with other participants such as central government, universities, none-governmental organizations, public workers and local people is emphasized. It is also emphasized how important the cooperation and use of common sense to develop intra-regional and inter-regional common tourism policies and establish common standards in tourism activities. In the study, the literature related to the subject has been reviewed, statistics about the number of tourists, tourism revenues and world orders are collected from the sources of theWorld Tourism Organization and Turkish Statistical Institute and presented in tables and graphs. In the result, both the importance of efficient use of scarce resources by monitoring closely the trend in tourism and preferences of tourists, and the necessity of adding the tourism potential of the country to the tourism supply regarding the types of tourism are stated.
