CHARACTER OF MATHEMATICS STUDENT TEACHERS’ LECTURING IN THE SCHOOLS
Abstract :
In Teacher education programmes, there are two main components which help the development of student teachers’ learning: (1) theory about teaching science and (2) practice in the field. It is important that these two components be integrated with each other. Both theory and practice or experience in the schools shape student teachers’ conceptions of teaching, learning and school context. Thus, student teachers need to learn not only theories about teaching and learning but also practice teaching in the field. The purpose of this study is to investigate mathematics student teachers’ lecturing in the schools. To this end, a questionnaire consisting of open-ended questions was administered to 30 student teachers from Secondary Mathematics Education department of a state university in Istanbul. Data were analyzed and interpreted by using quantitative and qualitative methods. The results revealed that in general the student teachers’ lessons generally contained doing exercises and examples. Mentors’ recommendations and requests about student teachers’ lessons reflect the approach “student who succeeds” rather than “student who learns”.
