A Meta-analysis on the Relationship between Attitude toward Mathematics and Mathematics Achievement
Abstract :
Meta-analysis; is a method of reaching a general conclusion about the results of the studies by statistically analyzing quantitative data obtained from a large number of independent studies of similar subjects. In this meta-analysis study, it is also aimed to synthesize the quantitative results of the studies on respectively small samples presenting the correlations between mathematics achievement and attitudes towards mathematics. The study includes a total of 25 studies which investigated the relation between mathematics achievement and attitudes towards mathematics in Turkish literature which were performed between 2000 and 2017. The total population of these researches is 8292 students which are from different educational levels. As a result of the meta-analysis, statistically significant and positive correlation between mathematics achievement and attitudes towards mathematics was determined as weak according to the random effect model. Moderator analysis based on the education level revealed that the combined effect size for the studies conducted at middle school and high school level was significant, positive and at modest level. In addition, the effect size for the studies conducted at university level was not significant.
