Abstract :
Purpose: Depending on aging process there are some changes in cell an organ level so this situation requires specific, qualified nursing care to elderly patient who had surgical intervention. This research, quality nursing care to elderly patients in the surgery process, to be presented with the proposed assessment, general health status for the purpose of the study was planned. Method: The Research included 113 elderly patients who were over 65 years old, voluntary to this research and treated in surgical clinics between June and August 2008 in a government hospital in Manisa City. Sample selection method was not used in the study, the research sample was taken as the universe ( n= 113). The data were collected using a questionnaire which developed by researchers and face to face technique was used. For data analysis SPSS 11.0 program was used. Results: The average age of elderly patients participating in research was 73.32 ± 5.32 and 55.8 % were men. It was determined that of the patients 59.3 % were have chronic disease, 72.6 % were have auditory problems, 63.7 % were have visual problems, 74.3 % were have walking problems was 46.9 % were not feeding enough, 48.7% were have urinary incontinence and 15 % were have fecal incontinence. Of the patients 69% were using drug continuously, 41.6 % of them were using herbal medicines and 67.3 % were have previous falling. Conclusion: In the research, it was determined there were factors that affecting the general health status of geriatrics whose will have surgical intervention. It is recommended that the nurses, who are caring for elderly person, have to evaluate these factors.
