Abstract :

Objective: This study was carried out so as to determine the attitudes of nursing students about ageism. Material and Method: A descriptive and cross-sectional type study consisted of 85 of 110 nursing students currently attending at in a nursing department of Health School. A questionnaire which includes defining characteristics and Ageism Attitude Scale (AAS) were used has data collection tools. The data obtained from this study was reviewed in computer environment in the light of, student-t test, Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis analyses. Findings: The nursing students AAS mean score was found as 83.67±9.25. While no statistical difference was detected between the negative ageism from the sub scale of AAS, limiting the life of the elderly, and the total score of AAS and caring of the old person during clinical applications, statistically significant difference was found (p 0.05) between the mean score of the positive ageism from the sub-scale of AAS and caring the old person during clinical applications. Moreover, it has been detected that those students who wanted to live with their mother/father or both had higher mean score (p 0.05) that they had from the sub-scale regarding limiting the life of the elderly. Result Generally, it was found out that the nursing students had positive attitudes regarding ageism.
