CRITICALLY INVESTIGATION OF POSTGRADUATE NURSING DISSERTATIONS ABOUT OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSING IN TURKEY
Abstract :
Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate postgraduate nursing theses within the area of occupational health from past to today with a critical aspect. Methods: Document analysis method was used in the research designed as a qualitative method. Higher Education Thesis Center database was screened by using key words of “occupational health, employee health” and 15 postgraduate nursing theses were found. As a data collection tool a “thesis-introductory form” and a “control table” related to documentary analysis of the occupational health theses were used. To examine theses, a written permission was obtained from the ethical committee of Ege University School of Nursing. Results: The first thesis related to occupational health was a doctoral thesis completed in 1990; 10 of the theses were master and 5 were doctoral theses. It was determined that the type of research method was quantitative in all theses and descriptive in 11 theses. It was identified that titles were not consistent with the contents in 3 theses, abstract didn’t clearly described the subject in 5 theses, key words weren’t properly written in 14 theses, research problem wasn’t explained in 6 theses and the permission of ethical committee was lacking in 9 theses. 6 of theses had insufficient literature data; however, findings failed to meet the aim of the research in 3 theses, results section wasn’t supported by important findings of the study in 2 theses, the resources used were frequently journals, books, gray literature and internet and had concentrated on areas out of nursing. Conclusion: Consequently, the theses reviewed demonstrate that limited number of research has been carried out related to occupational health in the field of nursing in Turkey. In the light of the research results, it is recommended that quantitative studies should be backed up by qualitative ones and the researches should be based on nursing theories. Besides, new researchers to work in this area should improve themselves by considering their deficiencies concerning research methods and techniques.
