  • Abstract
Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) (Pruritus gravidarum, Icterus gravidarum) means to accumulation of bile in the liver. ‘Obstetric Cholestasis’ is also known as pregnancy-sepecific accumulation of bile. ICP occurs mainly in the third trimester of pregnancy. Because it is a condition of pregnancy, rapidly resolving after delivery. However ICP may recur in subsequent pregnancies. Maternal effects of ICP are mild; however, there is a clear association between ICP and higher frequency of fetal distress, preterm delivery, and sudden intrauterin fetal death. ICP is characterized by maternal pruritus, raised serum bile acids and sometimes jaundice. Ursodeoxycholic acid is currently the most effective treatment. In this article discussed the characteristics of ICP, maternal and fetal health protection and the importance of nursing care in order to prevention of negative consequences.
