EVALUATION OF NURSING STUDENTS OPINIONS TOWARDS CAREER PLANNING
Abstract :
Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate nursing students opinions towards career planning. Material and Methods:: Descriptive study was conducted with 253 students at Ege University School of Nursing in 2010-2011 academic year. The data was collected by a guestionnaire form (total sixteen guestions) which was developed by researchers supported by the literature. Questionnaire form includes; demographic characteristics (four questions), career plan descriptions (one question), area, position, unit which they want to work after graduation, and reason for choosing these (four questions), opinions and knowledge about career planning (seven questions). Results: The average age of students was 22.10 ± 1.05 and 74.3% of the students was in 20-22 age group. 85.8% of them were female and 32.0% of them was attended in 3rd class. It was found that 54.7 % of students could not make a definition of career planning. It was found that only 26.5% of students had information on career planning. To make a marriage (54.9%) and to have a child with the same rate were identified as factors influencing career. It was found that postgraduate students want to work mostly in the hospital (86.6%), with the nursing position (55.3%) at surgical units (40.3%). Conclusion: It was found that students were need counseling by faculty members about career planning. It was offered to organize career days on a regular basis, and to encourage the active participation of the students in these activities. Also it was proposed organizing awareness seminars for intern students planning a career.
