LEARNING NEEDS OF GYNECOLOGICAL SURGERY PATIENTS BEFORE DISCHARGESUMMARY

Objective: The purpose of the study was to describe learning needs of women who hadgynecological surgery before discharge.Methods: The study is cross-sectional and and carried out with 140 patients who hadgynecological surgery in a University Hospital in Izmir, between August 2012 to January 2013,choosen by simple random sampling method and had appropriate study criterias. In datacollection, The Patient Information Form and Patient Learning Needs Scale (PLNS) were used. Inevaluation of the scale and total scale scores on each subscale are made.Results: The patients mean age is 47.29± 1.46, 42.9% of them have primery school education,64.3% of them not working, 3.6% of them have not social insurance, 85.7% them are married. 33.6% of them were at the third post-operative day, 36.4% of them has complaints of pelvic mass,41.4% of them had total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingectomy operation 56.4% ofthem had received information about the process of treatment and 20.7% of them wish to takeinformation about the process and treatment of post-operative period. The total mean score of ThePatients Learning Needs Scale was 203.65±37.10 and it s level of importance rate was found 4.07which means very important. Subscales item mean scores were; medicines 33.51±5.98, lifeactivity 36.52±6.91, community and follow-up 23.27±5.09, feelings about the situation19.38±4.70, treatment and complications 38.24±6.11, life quality 32.12±6.65 and skin care19.81 ±4.35 and their level of importance rate were found between 3.87 He 4.24 which means veryimportant.Conclusion: As a result of this study, the learning needs of the patients was found high, Theproblems of women could solve by given planned education which has an important role indetermining the effectiveness.
