Abstract :
Objective: Job stress refers to deterioration of psychological and physiological balance caused by work-related situations, processes and interaction with other health care workers. The purpose of this study is to compare stress symptoms of nurses at hemodialysis (HD) unit to those at peritoneal dialysis (PD) and to examine their stress levels in terms of demographic characteristics.Material and Method: Of 400 nurses the study included 234 nurses (150 hemodialysis nurses and 84 peritoneal dialysis nurses) who accepted to participate in research and are registered to Turkish Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association and working in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis units in Turkey reached via e-mail. The nurses gave their informed consent. Socio-Demographic Information Form containing the descriptive characteristics of nurses and The Stress Symptoms Scale were used for the data. For evaluation of the data, frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation values were calculated; x2 and Mann-Whitney U test were used. Results: Analysis showed that an increased level stress symptom was found in HD nurses as compared with that of PD nurses. All the subscale score of Stress Symptoms Scale and the mean of total score were found to be higher in the HD nurse group. It was found that parasympathetic system (p=0,002), cognitive system (p=0,030), endocrine system (p=0,008), immune system (p=0,025) subscale scores and total scores (p=0,006) were statistically significantly different between two groups. With respect to demographic variables, while HD nurses showed only one difference based on age (p=0,016) an elevated level of stress score was detected in PD nurses who were single and who had problems associated with their health status. In terms of professional variables, although there was no significant difference in the HD nurses group, increased level of stress score was determined in the PD nurses group who was reluctant to continue working in a dialysis unit, and were dissatisfied with their work team and were lacking medical information and practice. Conclusion: As compared with PD nurses, HD nurses had significantly elevated levels of stress. It will be of great value that dialysis nurses working hard and under severe conditions, especially HD nurses, should be encouraged to participate in vocational training programs and that to cope with stress.
