Abstract :
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the causes introduce themselves as a nurse of the recent graduates midwives from the division of midwifery and final year students midwives.Materials and Methods: The research was carried out as a qualitative and quantitative with 72 new graduates and final year students midwife identified with convenience sampling in midwifery department of a state university in June-November 2014. Data were collected with an open-ended question. In this question, it was asked to complete the phrase white space from new graduates and student midwives I and my friends would like to introduce Iexpress and made as a nurse myself I himself because of the ............. reasons. Data were analysed as a qualitative and quantitative, and reported statements were grouped under the main themes of the image ofmidwifery profession in the community : application places and midwifery profession.Results: The new graduate and student midwives, concerning the image of midwife profession in society, reported the reasons to introduce themselves as nurses most that the community described as same qualification of midwives and nurses (n=30, 41.6%), nursing was a more respectable profession (n= 16, 22.2%) and the community did not recognize the midwifery profession (n= 13, 7 8. 7 %). Participants were expressed the causes about practice fields more as the working outside of their area of midwives (n= 11, 15.2%) and the making to nursing tasks (n=3,4. 1%). The reasons concerning midwifery profession showed more as that the score entry to midwifery division was lower than the nursing division (n=2 7, 29.1 %), could not assimilate to midwifery (n= 13, 18.0%) and they did not rely on the training received (n= 11% 15.2).Conclusion: This study revealed that the new graduate students and midwifery introduced themselves and their friends as nurses with many causes including related to the image of the midwifery profession in the community, the application areas and midwifery profession. The development of the professional identity of midwives might be contributed by taking into account this information in the midwifery training, implementation and management.
