THE USE OF HONEY IN DIABETIC FOOT ULCERS

Despite recent developments in antimicrobial treatment, diabetic foot ulcers (a major complication in diabetic patients) requiring hospitalization and advancing up to amputation are seen as a serious problem. The treatment of diabetic foot ulcers is protracted, intensive and costly. Therefore, a variety of approaches including topical wound care have been applied. One such approach is the topical application of honey, which is considered a complementary treatment. There has been a recent increase of interested in the application of honey during wound care, with honey dressing becoming a widely used. The efficacy of honey in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers has recently been demonstrated. Thus, honey is a naturel and low-cost agent capable of accelerating the healing of diabetic foot ulcers. Nurses should follow new developments in the treatment of diabetic ulcers to be able to provide the most effective care.
