DETERMINATION OF THELEVEL OF TRENDS IN MEDICAL ERRORS OF THE NURSES WORKED AT ONE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Abstract :
Objective: Medical errors cause significant morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients.This descriptive study was implemented to determine the trend level and affecting factors in medical errors.Methods: The population of the research was consisted of all nurses working in Dokuz Eyliil University Training and Research Hospital, the sample was consisted of 418 nurses who participated to the study. A questionnaire and Medical Errors Trends Scale were used in collecting of the data. The data were collected between the dates April-May 2012. Numerical and percentage distribution, ANOVA and t test were used in data analysis. The study was conducted in accordance with ethical principle, the necessary legal and ethical approval for conducting of the study was obtained.Results: Nearly one third (34.4%) of nurses has experienced a medical error for himself or a loved one, 50.7% were encounters with a medical error. The mean score of subscale Medication and Blood Transfusion Applications was 86,14±4,77, the mean score of subscale Nosocomial infection was 57,08±4,33, the mean score of subscale Patient Monitoring and Material Security was 40,70±4,24, the mean score of subscale Falls was 22,61±2,64, and the mean score of subscale Communication was 24,03±1,86. The most trend to make error of nurses were found to be Patient Monitoring and Material Security and Falls. Trend to make error of Medication and Blood Transfusion Applications, Nosocomial infection, Patient Monitoring and Material Security and Falls was found lower in nurses aged between 34-55 age group. Trend to make error of Communication was found lower in nurses working in internal units. Trend to make error of Falls was found lower in nurses working in intensive core units than those working in internal and surgical units. Trend to make error of Nosocomial infection, Patient Monitoring and Material Security was higher in nurses who stand guard than those nurses who does not stand guard. Increasing the shift number monthly of nurses, Trend to make error of Transfusion Medicine and Applications Hospital Infections ; Patient Monitoring and Material Security was increased. When decreased the daily working time of nurse, the trend to make error of Transfusion Medicine and Applications, Patient Monitoring and Material Security Communication were decreased.Conclusion: Trend to make error of Nosocomial infection, Patient Follow up and Material Safety of Transfusion Medicine and Applications, Patient Monitoring and Material Security : Patient Monitoring and Material Security Falls and communication of nurses were very low. Daily working time and number of shift of nurses should be reduced. Nurses should reduce the risk of falls and monitoring of patients by following the required protocols. Nurses and all employees must be trained continuously on prevention and the role of medical errors. Problems in the health care system lead to medical errors should be corrected. Repetition of the study in different sample groups is recommended.
