UNIVERSITY STUDENTS PERCEPTIONS OF NURSING PROFESSION AS AN IDEAL CAREER

Objective: The study was implemented to examine university students perceptions of nursing profession as an ideal career and the impact of some socio-demographics on their perceptions of nursing at a university in izmir.Material and Methods: : The population of this descriptive study is consisted of all undergraduate degree university students those attending education at the different faculties/ high schools except nursing. A random sampling method was use and the sample was covered BOB volunteer students. Data was collected by Students Identification Form, and Nursing as an Ideal Career Scale ( 17 items) in 2007-2008 spring term in the campus.Results: Of students 5B.8% was women and the mean age was 21.37± 1.91. 62.9% of them has a relative who is a nurse. B5.1% of students had met and communicated with a nurse because of having health problem. As a result of this relation 36.6% of students positively, 7 6. 7% of themnegatively changed their idea about nursing. Total mean score of scale was 3.23±0.56. When university students perception of nursing as an ideal career was asked five highest items were found caring for people, have a college degree, work with hands, being busy, work very hard. The lowest five items of the scale were being powerful, make decision for self, good grades, make a lot of money, being a leader.Conclusion: It is determined that college students whose representing the younger generation perceived the nursing profession as an ideal by the mean of caring for people however nursing mean does not being powerful and leader as an ideal career.
