A Fieldwork Aimed to Determine E. Hemingway’s Viewpoint of “War” in “Farewell to Arms” in the Light of “Collocation ”
Abstract :
Hemingway’s novel Farewell to Arms that deeply influenced the fictional novel writing in the 20th century is considered as one of the masterpieces in American literature. In this novel Hemingway deals not only with war but also its negative reflections on human life; however, it is important to test the validity of these assessments within the framework of linguistics. In this context, to indicate how to interpret a topic in a literary text through linguistic data, collocation - the relationship of a word with the sentences that come before or after it - is taken as a base, and the word and group of words that are in relation with the phrase “war” in the novel in question are analyzed with the help of the Concord- Wordsmith Programme and interpreted.
