Abstract :
A Late Hittite hill top settlement and a basalt gate lion situated in Gözecik Village (old Mamağan Village), approximately 40 km northwest of Sivas/Divriği, probably point out to the most northeastern center of the known Late Hittite settlements.. The Iron Age settlement is situated on a high plateau in the northeast of the Gözecik valley. The settlement, approximately 500 X 500 m in size, must be one of the most important Iron Age settlements of the region. At the center of the settlement there is a tumulus which has been destroyed. A basalt gate lion which was found in the settlement has been transported into the village by the peasants. The gate lion whose lower part is missing has survived in two parts. A destroyed round relief with a hollow depression on the back side of the basalt block probably belongs to an unfinished column base. The missing details of the lion’s head which were created during the secondory usage of the basalt block show that it was never finished. The gate lion which reflects a different style showsfamiliar features of the Late Hittite art in general and the characteristics of the Late Hittite II art style.
