The Population Exchange issue in the Turkish novel and Mor Kaftanlı Selanik as a Population Exchange Novel
Abstract :
Despite the fact that the Population Exchange affected the most of the society in many ways and influenced the art and literature, it has not been tackled much by Turkish novelists until recently. Only after 1990s, this theme has found a place itself in Turkish novels with a great increase. In this regard, contextualization of the exchange which influenced great masses in Turkish novels is of great importance. Therefore, the analysis of the novel Mor Kaftanlı Selanik by Yılmaz Karakoyunlu, who used recent Varlık Magazine, 6-7 September Events and the assasination planned for Atatürk in İzmir as themes, is very important. The analysis of a novel about population exchange will help to see whether this social event has affected the Turkish novel positive or negative. For this reason, in this article, the issues of immigration ve population exchange and how they are reflected in the novel are dealt with for a better understanding of the theme. The rising interest of the exchange in the first quarter of XXI in Turkish novels and immigration which still has a serious impact on Turkish society have played a role for writing this article.
