Title Of Article :
THE PURPOSE AND NECESSITY OF ART IN TOM STOPPARD’S TRAVESTIES
Abstract :
In TravestiesTom Stoppard discusses what art is and what is the function of it in our life. Travesties presents three different and distinct views on art. Even if it is impossible in real life, Stoppard brings three important figures of the history to the stage and they begin to discuss politics, revolution, and art. The play presents Lenin’s professes, a belief in art as an instrument of the political revolution. Tzara sees the art as a harmless bourgeois enjoyment and represents Dadaist view of art. Joyce - as Stoppard also believes- is the spokesman of art for art’s sake. This paper focuses on Stoppard’s political and non-political concerns on art.
