Abstract :
In this study, the maternal image reflected in female figures of Leonardo da Vinci s paintings, is discussed psychoanalytically. Leonardo da Vinci has remained separate from his mother during the childhood and in that period, the old impressions of the lack of a maternal figure that he felt appeared in the female figures in his paintings. Three paintings of Leonardo were selected as being representative of maternal image that is clearly perceived: 1- Mona Lisa reflects the image of the maternal with the posture, glance and the smile that she has; 2- Leda, even in the story of Leda and the Swan, a theme which is with a sexual content, excels in the role of motherhood which is chaste, distance and a mother whose interest is on her children; 3- The Virgin and Child with St. Anne, as well, includes a synthesis of impressions from Leonardo s childhood. In this painting, Leonardo has combined himself with two of his mothers; one his own mother, Caterina and the other, Donna Albiera. The aim of the study is to draw attention, by a psychoanalytic analysis, to the forces from the unconscious and the connotations reflected in an instinctive way in the process of artistic creation, that intuited indirect way in the works of an artist (Leonardo da Vinci) recognized as a major feature. In this way, it is expected to contribute to the artistic culture by drawing attention to an important fact about the artist and his works. The research is a descriptive study based on a literature investigation and works reviewed.
