Abstract :
The First World War emerged as a reality which occurred at the beginning of the 20th century and which caused heavy, destructive consequences in terms of human history. The war which continued on two opposing states led to the incredible material and moral damage. The destruction created by the war led the societies to creativity when considered as a relatively positive development. In this process of creation, art played an active role and found a medium of expression far beyond the position of descriptive of nature, in the early 20th century. In the atmosphere of post-war, concepts related with past as traditions, nationalism, morality, etc. were questioned, indeed. Art had been re-positioned over politics (or war), as antagonist or supporter, using all its expressive power in the new world order. In this sense, the whole processes of the emergence of 20th century art movements were centered on the concept of war at some point, inevitably. Dada, on the other hand, represents opposition to war and all the values associated with it. In his movement, criticism and inquiry-centered narratives he especially enjoys humor and satire. Dada s representatives express Avant-garde as never before in a perspective as often as they do, centering on humor and satire and offering innovative, groundbreaking work in various branches of art, such as paintings, cartoons, literature, and theater. Dada represented these behaviors, forming against past. In the movement, criticism and inquiry-centered narratives were based on humor and satire. George Grosz‟s caricaturized artworks became concrete examples of this attitude. In this paper, Dada which was born during The First World War and affected next generations, tried to be analyzed through artworks of George Grosz based on its relation with humor.
