Title Of Article :
Responses of Different Melon Genotypes to Drought Stress
Abstract :
Drought is a a major abiotic stress reducing the yield of a wide variety of crops all over the world. A screening study was performed in order to determine the genotypical differences of 30 melon genotypes and cv. Galia F1 for drought stress. Seeds were germinated in a mixture of peat: perlite of 2:1 ratio. After 21 days of sowing, seedlings were transferred to plastic pots containing mixture of peat: perlite of 2:1 ratio. Plants with four leaves were subject to drought stress. Genotypes were classified according to the severity of leaf damage symptoms by using a 0- 5 symptoms scores. Fresh and Dry shoot and root weights, plant height and stem diameter, leaf number, leaf area, relative water content (RWC) and membrane injury index (MII), the shoot and root concentrations of K and Ca were also investigated. In conclusion, the melon genotypes showed large variation in their response to drought tolerance. Reliable and effective screening parameters for determineting drought tolerance level of the melon genotypes were discussed.
