Abstract :
Nagorno-Karabakh, which is legally located within the borders of Azerbaijan, has been under unjust occupation of Armenia for 25 years. A ceasefire agreement was signed as a result of the intervention of the international organizations and some countries, yet no consensus has been reached so far to solve the problem. Following the Karabakh War which caused the death of about 30,000 people and the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh by Armenia, nearly 700 Azerbaijani Turks have been forced to leave their lands. The issue of Nagorno-Karabakh, for which all circles show awareness as the most important international problem of Azerbaijan, has been addressed many times in Azerbaijan cinema with its various aspects. Since the first years of the hot conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan arising from the issue which goes back many years, a lot of filmmakers have addressed the issue through their films. In some of these films, the war and war environments were directly conveyed to the audience, while in some others, they were indirectly conveyed through certain persons and events. “Nabat”, directed by Elcin Musaoglu, is one of the remarkable films in this sense. The approach to the problem is quite different from the other examples in terms of narration and war presentation. It has been shown in many countries and international festivals and has achieved significant success. Nabat describes the destructive and devastating dimension of the Karabakh War through the story of an elderly woman/a mother who resists not to leave her village and the film maintains a life struggle under difficult circumstances arising from the war. The war phenomenon is addressed generally in the film, where the front is not shown and there is nothing belonging to the war other than the sound of gunfire from distance. It was emphasized that the victims and the losers of the wars are women/mothers and what is experienced is in fact the same in every war. And in the film, it was tried to show the destruction that the war creates in the lives of people rather than the war itself.
