Abstract :
The comparison of domestic political structures is a missing component of the literature on the Cyprus conflict. This article reviews efforts to transform an antagonistic political structure to an agonistic one in Cyprus. Institutional frameworks produced by political engineering are scrutinized from a critical perspective. Article first examines governance and power sharing proposals made by the Turkish and the Greek Cypriot negotiators. Then, two major power-sharing approaches namely consociationalism and the integrative model are reviewed to compare and contrast different proposalsbrought to the negotiation table. In the conclusion section, missing and risky components of these proposals to establish a sustainable democratic federal structure in Cyprusare presented, and the future of consociationalist and integrative theories are discussed.
