Abstract :
One of the most important figures, who left his mark on the Turkish political life in the 1960s, is Mehmet Ali Aybar. Among the social upheavals and the rapid changes in the country, Mehmet Ali Aybar has expressed probably the most progressive and original ideas of his time. Mehmet Ali Aybar has made significant evaluations and analyses in the context of the Marxist theory, socialist movements, and the Turkish po-litical life. His understanding of independence and critique of capitalism regarding Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s views, the meaning and importance he attributes to freedom and democracy despite the dominance of the determinist approaches of his time, the cri- tiques that he has made to Marxism and Leninism are the approaches exhibiting his uniqueness. Considering the conjuncture of the historical process in question, this study aims to shed light on the ideas of Mehmet Ali Aybar with respect to politics, economy, and society.
