The Transition from the Attitude of Critical Discourse to the Creation of Counter-Public Sphere: A Study on the Committee of Union and Progress’s Opposition to Abdulhamid II.
Abstract :
At the end of 19th century, the Ottoman state began to use modern techniques to solve the problems of governmental and legitimacy. Abdulhamid II made more effort in this regard. He made use of icons, symbols, rituals, practices and visual contents in order to penetrate his sovereignty to the Ottoman society. This new policy both took ad-vantage of and contributed to the formation and penetration of the Hamidian regime. The Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) attempted to create a counter-public sphere constitutionalism-based public sphere via press against the oppressive regime of Abdulhamid II. In other words, in order to legitimize their ideas and opposition to the Hamidian regime, after the Abdulhamid’s autocratic policies. This study will attempt to investigate the CUP’s press to create a counter-public sphere constitutionalism-based against the Sultan’s autocratic monarcy.
