COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF BRIC COUNTRIES AND TURKEY’S LEVELS OF EXPORT SPECIALIZATION AND COMPETITION

Crises focused on developed countries has occured in recent years. However, emerging economies have continued to increase economic growth and competitiveness generally. Especially, the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China) played a leading role in the economies. Turkey has also accompanied to increasing economic performance of the BRIC countries in recent years, and global competition wars have escalated among the countries mentioned day by day. In this paper, between 1993-2010, by evaluating Turkey and the BRIC countries export similarities, level of export specialization and competition on the basis of product and factor intensity were calculated. The results of this study show that BRIC economies specialized in the export of raw materials and labor-intensive products. Whereas, Turkey mainly specialized in the export of labor and capital intensive products. It is remarkable that China specialized in the export of high value added R D-based products and continuously increased competitive advantage.
