TEACHERS’ PERSPECTIVES ON THE REASONS FOR GIVING STUDENTS PERFORMANCE TASKS
Abstract :
Performance task is a work which supports students’ learning and enhances their cognitive skills by providing both contextual and noncontextual problems. It provides students opportunities to work on real-life problems. Performance assessment, which is based on a constructivist approach, is one of the most important assessment ways in which students are expected to resolve sophisticated problems. Accordingly, it is essential to understand teacher perspectives of performance tasks and their capability of using performance tasks effectively in classrooms. The aim of the current study is to understand why teachers give students performance tasks. The current study involved 120 preschool and elementary school teachers who work in Kütahya in 2008-2009 Education year. The results of the research showed that 65,8 percent of the teachers believe in the importance of performance tasks. Moreover, teachers think that the number of performance tasks conducted by students should be limited so that they can achieve objective assessment of students’ learning.
