KARAKOÇAN (ELAZIĞ) FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF CITY GEOGRAPHY
Abstract :
The city of Karakoçan is situated on a tectonic plain which took form with Karakoçan fracture zone. Surrounding of the plain which consists of volcanic alluvium is surrounded by high mountains. It has damp and cold climate characteristics of East Anatolian Region Karakoçan is one of the towns of Republic Period, but according to the investigations, Karakoçan has an origin which dates back to the Calcolitic Period. Karakoçan and its surrounding has an important place in every period. Its being on the trade roads, having the iron ore, and the stock – breeding potentiel of the region has made Karakoçan important in every period. From the 1960 onwards, migrations from the abroad, has an important impact on the development of Karakoçan. People living abroad have their holiday in Karakoçan and invest their money in Karakoçan. One of these investments is on the residence sector. Being unsafe of the countrysides because of terror increases the migrations to Karakoçan. Having people who live in abroad and migrations furthermore, because there are no big cities around Karakoçan, it has become a central place.
