Abstract :
Top features that distinguish societies from each other are religion, language and ethnicity. Within these features, there are cultural elements that the society created and experienced. Music has a significant share among those elements. Each society has its own original type of music. In Turkish land, although there are a number of types of music, it is possible to classify the mainstream music into two main categories. These are Classical Turkish Music and Turkish Folkloric Music, both of which have ‘Makam’ (special musical modes in Turkish Music) based structures. Being ‘Makam’ based is a distinctive feature of universal musical culture. ‘Makam’s reflect emotional, aesthetic and joyous elements of Turkish society and they play a role in distinguishing Turkish music from that of other societies. Some ‘Makam’s in Turkish Music is widely used compared to others. ‘Huseyni’ is one of those ‘Makam’s that are widely used in Turkish tradition music. ‘Makam’ based music exists in some other societies including Arabic, Greek and Azerbaijani, ‘Huseyni’ has not been used as much as it is used in Turkish geography. An obvious evidence of this situation is the huge number of ‘Huseyni’ based folkloric songs in Turkish repertoire. This is an indication that ‘Huseyni’ ‘Makam’ is a distinctive feature of Turkish society, compared to other societies that also include ‘Makam’ based music in their traditions. This study, while examining the historical development of ‘Huseyni’ ‘Makam’ and its use in Turkish Folkloric Music, aims to put forth that the ‘Huseyni’ ‘Makam’ has a uniting attribute for Turkish Folkloric Music culture. Literature survey about theoretical and applied research about this ‘Makam’ is provided. Analysis of these studies has shown that ‘Huseyni’ ‘Makam’ has a uniting attribute for Turkish Folkloric Music culture.
