Abstract :
In the present study, the factors which generate implicit meaning in Turkish were addressed within the framework of their functions in teaching mother tongue. The content of the study is composed of two main parts. In the first part, nine concepts which generate implicit meaning were addressed. In this context, metaphors, syncretisms, emotion values/ connotations, citations, sentences which show the distinction of deep structure- surface structure, presuppositions, implications, idioms and expressions were analyzed with examples. It was determined that these concepts were different from each other in terms of both their features and their usages. Especially distance syncretism can be considered as the most typical example of factors which generate the implicit meaning. In the second part of the study, implicit meanings which were analyzed were addressed within the framework of their functions in mother tongue teaching. The analysis of the factor which generates an implicit meaning and its functions in mother tongue teaching were assessed under the same title. At the end of these assessments, it was determined that implicit meanings were effective in the processes of abstract thinking, creative thinking and developing creative language skills, making the knowledge permanent in the long-term memory in the information-processing process and reading/comprehension process.
