THE USE OF CARTOONS IN TEACHING TURKISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Abstract :
Teaching Turkish as a foreign language has been expanding and gradually becoming a more significant field. This necessitates making changes in terms of teaching (making use of audio-visual tools, variety in methods and techniques). One of the visual elements that can be used in teaching is cartoons. In Turkish as a foreign language courses, cartoons can be used in order to attract student s attention to the lesson, motivate the students by the help of humor in the cartoons, carrying out various grammar, reading, speaking and writing activities through cartoons and increasing intercultural communication competence. The aim of this study is to present a perspective as to how cartoons can be utilized in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. The study is limited to subject classification in Turkish as a foreign language coursebooks, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and one of the visual elements, cartoons. The study is based on a review of the literature. Course books for teaching Turkish as a foreign language as well as the Common European Framework were reviewed in terms of the subject classifications; accordingly recommendations as to how cartoons can be utilized in teaching the course have been presented.
