Abstract :
This study focuses on contributions of structural linguistics, which was treated and underpinned by Ferdinand de Saussure in General Linguistics Theory, to language teaching. Within the framework of the study, firstly general information about historical development of linguistic studies beginning from the early phases until the beginning of the 19th century are given place. Studies conducted in early and mid phases which have a big importance when evaluated with today’s point of view are treated in historical process analysis. The reason for giving place to general information about historical process is to present differences in point of views of Saussure for language in a better way. The main reason of language, its conventional characteristic, and system concepts were focused on within the framework of the innovations that General Linguistics Theory brought to language education, which compose the main part of the study. In addition to these concepts, such subjects as comparison of written language and spoken language, language and statement contrast, substance and form, meaning and value, serial and syntagmatic relations were also focused on. It is thought that these subjects, which are analyzed in detail in General Linguistics Theory, bring language education new point of views in theoretical and practical senses. These subjects that Saussure gave place to in his theory, which he developed by analyzing previous phases very well, are for describing language phenomenon however their contributions to language teaching in the background cannot be ignored. In short, structuralist linguistics approach is evaluated in this study in terms of language teaching.
