Abstract :
This research aims discuss and give suggestions on how cartoons can be used in enriching the students’ vocabulary knowledge by giving information on vocabulary in cartoons. Subject of the research, which uses scanning model, constitutes cartoons while its inspection object is first five episodes of five cartoons which aired in the thematic, clean, children channels in Turkey, between the years of 2012-2013. While deciding the cartoons constituting the study group data, semi-structured interview forms were the base. During the analysis of data, among the document analysis techniques content analysis and frequency analysis techniques were used. For content analysis, vocabulary is the main theme, and foreign words, terms, argot, phrases, proverbs, reduplications, chunks, translation words are sub-themes. Similar researches in the field are based on while deciding the themes. Data regarding the themes are expressed as frequency assets according to the episodes of the cartoons. Then data about themes are arranged into charts. As a result, it is revealed that contribution of cartoons, which are thought to be the subjects of the research, is generally positive for 5th and 6st grade students’ vocabulary.
