مرکز منطقه ای اطلاع رساني علوم و فناوري - THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE LEVELS OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ ALIENATION AND LONELINESS

Abstract :

This research study aims to examine the loneliness levels of university students in terms of various variables and determine the relationship between their loneliness and alienation levels. The study group is selected through convenience sample technique and consists of 403 students (226 girls, 177 boys) studying at Inonu University during the 2013-2014 academic year. In the study, UCLA Loneliness Scale, Dean Alienation Scale and Personal Information Forms were used as data collection tools. In the data analysis part regarding the examination of loneliness levels of university students in terms of various variables, t-test was used for the comparison of two groups and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) techniques were used for the comparison of more groups. F statistics was used to determine the intergroup differences. In addition, stepwise regression analysis was carried out to determine the power of the university students’ alienation in predicting their loneliness levels. According to the results of the study, male students and the students who are not satisfied with their departments have higher levels of loneliness. As a result of the stepwise regression analysis, while a significant positive, correlation was found between isolation, a sub-dimension of alienation, powerlessness and loneliness; a not significant correlation was found between irregularity and loneliness.
