THE EFFECT OF CHANGES IN MICROSTRUCTURE LEVEL ON THE VIEWS OF STUDENTS ON THEIR READING COMPREHENSION
Abstract :
This study aims to determine that Turkish texts with are made changes in microstructure levelwhich impact on the views of students regarding their reading comprehension. The data of the study that is gathered with interview is the result of qualitative research. The study group consists of 20 students who are studying at 6th grades in two different public middle schools in Trabzon. For research, it is chosen a text (Hayata Açılan Kapılar) in 7th grades which level of readability is “difficult”. In chosen text, it is made some microstructure changes without changing readability level. The students’ views which are gathered by interview form that is presented about the level of understanding in two different types of text (the type of text which is the original and changed with microstructure level) are evaluated. There are 13 questions in interview form. Five of questions are intended to be understood of general level in text, the other eight ones are intended to linguistic units chosen in texts which are made microstructure changes. It is tried to determine that microstructure changes through the questions which are related to understand the text how reflect on students’ views. The students within the scope of this study have stated that they comprehend the text with microstructure changes easier than the original text. It is seen that main reasons for this situation are related to the shortening of sentences, the use of normal word order and the use of compound and coordinate sentences instead of complex sentences. In conclusion, the research is suggested that the microstructure changes carried out for the purpose of reducing textual difficulty could be used in arranging the text to be used in the process of education.
