Title Of Article :
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AND MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE IN TURKEY
Abstract :
There is a big mathematics achievement gap among students in Turkey. Investigating relationship between opportunities to learn and mathematics performance could help to minimize the achievement gap. There is no major study in Turkey using standard datasets as PISA that investigate relationship between opportunities to learn and mathematics performance, and differentiation of opportunity to learn. The results showed that there is a relationship between opportunities to learn and mathematics performance in Turkey according to PISA 2012 dataset. Opportunity to learn in PISA is measured as content, teaching practices and teaching quality dimensions and it is seen that content dimension explains the majority of variances in mathematics performance. Students who come from socioeconomically disadvantaged families get lower opportunity to learn. Additionally, there is a huge variation in terms of opportunity to learn in Turkey as compared to OECD countries and Singapore, the most successful country of PISA 2012, which means that there is also opportunity to learn gap among students in Turkey.
