Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of changing competition rules on the techniques used at competitions. A total of 72 semi-final and final competitions were analyzed from the 23rd European Women Taekwondo Championships in 2002, 10th World Women Taekwondo Championships in 2005 and 7th International Open Women Taekwondo Tournament in 2009, all of which had different scoring systems. Scoring techniques and percentage range of scores in rounds were determined. One way variance analysis and Tukey post hoc test were used in determining the technical differences. Our study revealed that 85 points (36,48%) were taken in the first round, 79 points (33,91% ) were taken in the second round, and 69 points (29,61%) were taken in the third round of the championship in 2002. According to the results of the championship in 2005, 48 points (26,97 %) were taken in the first round, 69 points (38,76%) were taken in the second round, 61 points (34,27%) were taken in the third round. In the tournament in 2009, 72 points (35,47 %) were taken in the first round, 65 points (32,02 %) were taken in the second round, and 66 points (32,51 %) were taken in the third round. Most scoring techniques were direct palding (49,36%) and counter palding (36,05%) while the least scoring techniques were counter twid chagi (0,86%) and counter dollyo (0,43%) at the championship in 2002. Most scoring techniques of the championship in 2005 were counter palding (26,97%), palding on bosom (25,84%) and the least scoring technique was counter dollyo (3,33%). At the tournament in 2009, while counter palding (25,12%) and direct palding (14,78%) were the most scoring techniques, palding with front foot (1,97%) and palding on bosom(4,43%) were the least scoring techniques. As the last rule change, using electronic sefigard while scoring the techniques which include hitting the body brought about a standard for scoring. Every rule change in Taekwondo competition rules has been determinative on the techniques used at competitions. Electronic sefigard system will help getting more fair results in competitions.
