A REVİEW OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ THOUGHTS ABOUT SPORTS FACILITIES AND ORGANIZATIONS (EXAMPLE OF UNIVERSITY INONU)

This study aims to find out the students’ levels of awareness and usage of the university’s sport facilities and to find out their views on the sport organizations organized by the Head of Health, culture and sports. The study sample consists of 1653 students (914 females, 739 males) studying different faculty and higher schools of İnönü University. The data were collected through a questionnaire and the data were analyzed by using percentage (%) and frequency (f) values. While 16.6% the of the students were actively engaged in sports, 52.2% of the students participated in sports as a recreational activity. The results of the research showed that the university students are partly aware of the sports facilities in the university and they think that these facilities are partly sufficient. Again, the students think that sports organizations are not sufficient and they are partially aware of the announcements of these activities. In addition, the students’ demands for participating in sport branches and for doing rational sport are not properly assessed by managers. Thus, the students (56,2 %) are of the opinion that the management of the present sport facilities should belong to the department of Physical Education and Sports Higher School. On the other hand, it was found out that the students (55,4 %) could not use the sports facilities considerably and those who used (44,6 %) preferred the facilities which included team sports more. As a result, the study showed that the students had information about sports facilities and organizations but they couldn’t use the sports facilities effectively. In addition, it was found out that the administrators were not effective in realizing the students’ demands and in leading them to sports or sports facilities. It can be concluded that universities should have a stronger communication with students in terms of sports facilities and management. Thus, new activities should be planned and implemented in accordance with the students’ interest.
