Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that may prevent the participation of female preparatory education students in recreational activities in terms of some variables. . The population of the research consists of the female students in the School of Foreign Languages of Ankara University and the sample consists of 200 female students randomly selected among the population ( Χ age=19.07±1.17). In order to determine the factors that may prevent the participation of the students in leisure time activities, “Leisure Constraints Scale-18” was used. Cronbach’s Alpha values were found between 0.82 (facility) and 0.64 (lack of concern). Normal distribution of the data was examined by Levene test. The data showing normal distribution were tested with “t-test” and “One-Way Analysis of Variance”. LSD Tests were applied in the post-hoc analysis to identify the sources of significant differences. The data not showing normal distribution were analyzed by the Kruskal Wallis test. The margin of error was regarded as 0.05. In the study, facility factor was observed as the first constraint in the participation of the university students’ into the leisure activities. When the factors that constrain the participation were examined according to the female students’ age, type of town lived most and accommodation situation no significant differences were found. Female students who had previously never participated in leisure activities in sports, were found to encounter more constraint than female students who participated in sports activities. In addition, the female students who have good/ very good life standards –in comparison with the ones having normal or poor life standards - thought that their participation in the leisure time activities were constrained less. The results showed that female students’ situation about doing sports and life standards affected their participation in leisure time activities. Therefore it is important to direct students to sports at an early age and arrange free activities at the university.
