Abstract :
Powder metallurgy is the method of forming parts from the powders of metal and ceramic. Powders combine with mechanical and thermal effects. Today, powder metallurgy has widely been used. Powder metallurgy is an alternative to the conventional forming method. Desing engineers prefer light weight and high strength materials. These materials have been used as the construction elements in the manufacturing industry. For this purpose in recent years, intensive researches have been made on the metallic foam. The internal structure of metallic foams are porous. Pores distinguish the strenghth, lightness and the impact resistance properties to the metallic foams. Pores distinguish the thermal insulation and vibration reduction features. For today, metallic foam production has been produced from a lot of metal. Metallic foams have porous structure like a sponge. Porous structure is obtained by special methods. Other facilities of metallic foams are easy forming, welding, cheap cost and resistant to corrosion. Also, the size of the pores effect the mechanical properties. Production of metallic foam metarials are made by injecting gas to the melted mass continuously. Another method is adding the substances to form bubbles into the melted mass. Also, metallic foams are produced by powder metallurgy. Metallic foam materials are used in automotive, construction, shipping, aviation, railway transport, elevators, armour made and in the field of biomaterials. In this study, the technique of powder metallurgy, production methods of metallic foam materials, properties and using areas are examined in the light of recent developments.
