Abstract :
Solid waste generation per capita is increasing daily as a result of changes in the consumption habits. Solid waste incineration is being used across Europe for 50 years. The basic advantage of thermal methods which is being preferred in the countries that have a land problem, is the reduction of the weight and the volume of the waste. In EU countries, 59 million tones of solid waste is being disposed every year by thermal methods in nearly 400 plants. In the USA there are 87 incineration plants in which the household waste is disposed. The new solutions should be detected instead of land filling in order to minimize the environmental damages and to develop economical aspect for the waste disposal. In this study, it is being evaluated the applicability in Istanbul and the general situation of solid waste incineration technology which is being used widespread as a municipal solid waste disposal method especially in the developed countries.
