DEVELOPMENT OF HOTELS IN GALATA AND PERA (1840 – 1914)
Abstract :
The modernization period in 19th century caused important changes in the travelling and accomodition systems. These changes effected to architecture of accomodition buildings as inevitable. Galata and Pera Region has the first hotels in İstanbul. The first hotels began to serve in 1840 in Kuledibi area of Galata. The luxury hotels as in Europe built in Pera until The First World War in 1914. These buildings are situated in near of Tünel, Galata Harbour, Galata Tower, Meşrutiyet and İstiklal Streets. Hotels architectural features changes according to the terms of the parcels were constructed, their offered services, profile of customers etc. There are hotels which have rooms with just some common spaces and also there are hotels which are luxury as European hotels. Hotels were built of wood or stone as traditionaly. The first hotels have two or three floors. At the end of the century, hotels were built modern material as brick and steel etc and also modern structure systems. So hotels were built larger and higher than predecessors. Hotels don’t have typical facades. They have traditional, neoclassical or mixed facades. Grand and luxury hotels have splendid decorations which were designed by famous European architectures and craftsmen. These Grand hotels are also important for having technical equipments and technology of the date of built. This research appoints that there are 33 hotels in Galata and 49 hotels in Pera between 1840 and 1914 dates. And also it is determined there are 4 hotels in Galata and 10 hotels in Pera which are existed today. And then it is defined deformations and their causes of these 14 hotels. Finally It is made suggestions to get rid of these deformations. It is believed that datas of this work will be helpfull for planning, arranging and conservation labors in Galata ve Pera.
