Abstract
In theise study, the effect of addition of honey at different ratios to goat semen diluted with skim milk and tris+egg yolk extenders on spermatological characteristics and lifespan during short term storage was investigated. The semen samples stored at 4-6°C. The motility between 24th and 60th hour in milk control group and up to 48th hour in tris control group was found higher than all honey groups. The HOS test value was similar in milk control with 1% honey group and was higher than other groups at 12nd and 24th hour. Between 36th and 60th hour, the control was higher than other groups. The HOS test values were high in tris control group up to 48th hour than all honey groups but similar to 1% honey group at 60th hour. The abnormal spermatozoon ratio in Tris control was lower than 1% honey group until 48th, 1% and 5% honey group at 48th hour. The dead/live spermatozoon ratio was lower in the milk control than in 5% honey group at 0st, 2.5% and 5% honey group at 12nd, between 24th and 72nd hour all trial groups. Tris control was lower than other groups up to 60th, only 5% honey group at 72nd hour. As a result, the control groups of tris and milk extenders were better than trial groups during short term storage with regard to spermatological quality and lifespan. It was concluded that tris extender was superior considering the intergroup comparisons and honey didn’t provide any improvement in the spermatological features.
