    CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND ANTIMICROBIAL EFFECTS OF STACHYS RUPESTRIS ESSENTIAL OIL

  • Abstract
    The genus Stachys (Lamiaceae) consists of over 300 species all around the world, while in our country 91 species and 116 taxa are represented with 48% endemism rate. Stachys species are known as “Deli adaçayı” or “Dağ çayı” in Anatolia and they are widely used in folk medicine against skin infections, peptic ulcers, respiration and kidney disorders for their antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antioxidant and cytotoxic properties. Several studies have been reported that common secondary metabolites of the Stachys L. are iridoids, flovonoids, diterpenes and essential oils. In the present study, the hydrodistilled essential oil composition of the flowering aerial parts of the Stachys rupestris Montbret et Aucher ex Benth, an endemic species for Mersin province, were determined by using gas chromatography/flame ionisation dedector and gas chromatography/mass spectrometer systems. α-pinene (14.4%), tetradecanoic acid (10.3%) ve β-caryophyllene (5.3%) were determined as main compounds of the oil.The antimicrobial effects of the essential oil against pathogenic bacteria and yeasts were evaluated by using microdilution susceptibilty tests as recommended to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute M27-A2 and M7-A7 protocols. The essential oil showed strong inhibitory effects against the tested Candida species compared to bacteria. Candida parapsilosis, C. zeylanoides and C. krusei were inhibited at the concentration of 31.25 μg/mL, while the C. zeylanoides was inhibited by the oil having a MIC value of 15.00 μg/mL.
