Abstract
Aim: We evaluated the effects of previously open renal surgery and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) on the results of subsequent PNL. Materials and Methods: Total 163 PNL cases were evaluated retrospectively. The patients were divided into three groups. Group 1 consisted of 80 patients with any stone surgery; group 2 consisted of 43 patients with previous open surgery and group 3 consisted 40 patients with previous PNL. The three groups were compared with respect to stone burden, operation time, number of access tracts, hospitalization, success rate, and complications. Results: The three groups were similar with respect to age, sex, and stone burden. There were no significant differences between the three groups with respect to the mean operative time. The mean operating time was calculated 106 minute. Mean scope time was calculated 1.48 minutes. There were no significant differences between the three groups with respect to scope time, mean nephrostomy time any mean hospital stay time. Apart from a patient who had clinically insignificant residual stone ( 4 mm) stone – free rate was 82.2% in all groups. The most frequent complication of all groups were bleeding requiring blood transfusion (8.6%) and fever above 38 C° (8%). Conclusion: Our study show that previous open nephrolithotomy or PNL does not have any effects on the success and complication rates of PNL.
