Introduction: To evaluate the epidemiological and clinical features of pediatric patients with eye trauma. Material and Method: The records of 116 pediatric patients aged under 16 years with eye trauma between january 2005 and september 2011 years were retrospectively screened in Afyon Kocatepe University Department of Ophthalmology. Age, gender, laterality, localization of trauma, ocular tissue effected by trauma, , causative material, ocular pathologies, cause of injury, initial and final visual acuity were recorded. Data were statistically evaluated with SPSS version 17.0. Results: Of 116 patients, 92 (%79.3) were boys and 24 (%24.7) were girls. The mean age was 9.2 }4.7 years. The right eye was affected in %46.6, left eye in %53.4 of cases. Game accidents (%19) were most common causes in all cases. The place of trauma was detected as %49.1 in playground, %24.1 in home, %18.1 in street, %6.9 in school. The most common ocular pathologies were corneal perforation (%19.7), scleral perforation (%13.9), traumatic cataract (%12.8), sclerocorneal perforation (%12.8) and other corneal patologies (%11.6). Cornea was the most common affected eye tissue. There was statistically significant difference between initial and final visual acuity (p 0.001). Discussion: Eye trauma can lead to decrease in visual acuity and morbidity in pediatric patients. For prevention of playground and house accidents, the potential risks of eye trauma should be explained to parents as a part of preventive medicine.
