Results of Treatment of Ingrown Toe Nail

Abstract
Objective: In this study we evaluated the results of Winograde procedure with electrocauterization in patients with ingrown toe nail. Material and Methods: A total of 65 toenails of 53 patients (17 female, 36 male) who complaint of pain, discharge and deformity of their toenail underwent partial wedge resec-tion of the nail and nail matrix and electrocauterization in between June 2010 and August 2012. According to the Heifetz’s staging system, 9 toenails were grade I, 27 toe-nails were grade II, 29 toenails were grade III. The infected cases were operated after improvement of inflammation by antibiotic treatment (fucidic acid 1500 mg/day). All patients received oral antibiotic treatment after procedure (fucidic acid 1500 mg/day). We evaluated the recurrence, postoper-ative infection, patient satisfaction by a questionnaire. Results: The mean follow-up period was 14 months (6-26 months). There was a recurrence in only one patient in fourth month. Three patients had wound infection in post-operative period. Debridement, intravenous antibiotic treatment and wound dressing every other day were ap-plied. All patients expressed their satisfaction with surgery in questionnaire. Conclusion: In treatment of ingrown toenail; İf Winograde procedure and electrocauterization is performed appropri-ately, it is very effective treatment and recurrence rate is very low and following this technique has high patient satisfaction.
