Abstract
Aim: Giardia is an intestinal parasit that infects various vertebrates. Giardiasis is known to be the most common protozoa infection in humans. It is an infection which must be treated. Results of the investigations on DNA excreations with PCR from more than a thousand of samples of the feces revealed that G. intestinalis, type A and B are related with human infections. The aim of this study was genotyping G.intestinalis as group A and B by molecular techniques such as PCR and RFLP with targeting TPI gen locus in patients diagnosed as giardiasis and investigating the relation of these genotype groups with clinical status of the disease as symptomatic or asymptomatic and also examining of the distrubution of these genotypes.Materials and Methods: The stool specimens of 75 patients diagnosed as giardiasis in Harran University Medical Faculty, Department of Microbiology between 2008 and 2011 were investigated. Microscopic examination with iodine for cyst, PCR for DNA amplification and RFLP for genotype analysis were used. Results: In our study, 69 of 75 patients were symptomatic and 6 of them were asymptomatic. While 67 of 69 symptomatic cases had genotype A, two of them had genotype B and all of the asymptomatic patients had genotype B.Conclusion: We observed the significiant relation between symptomatic patients and genotype A (p 0.05). We determined the predominance of genotype A according to genotype B numerically (p 0.05).
