Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The study was conducted on the purpose ofdetermining the level of knowledge about waste managementof nursing students who spend the large part ofthe education period on clinical practice and take chargeabout waste parsing efficiently.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The descriptive study wasconducted with 195 students who were from the nursingdepartment in a private university, the experiencewas for a clinical practice and the students accepted toparticipate in this study voluntarily. The information formwhich included 8 open-ended questions for determiningindividuals characteristics and 20 multiple choice questionsfor determining hospital waste management wasused to collect data. Frequency , percentage, chi-square,Mann-Whitney U and Kruskall Wallis tests were used toanalyze the results.RESULTS: When the students characteristics were examined,it was found that their average age were (was)20.6±1.49, 93.8% were females and 46.1% had the2nd-grade education. Almost all the students were determinedto have experience in clinical practice whetherin state and (or) private hospitals. While 91.1% of thestudents stated that they had received a hospital trainingfrom nurses, 63.1% an educator, 72.3% from clinicaladaptation training while it was determined that the totalaverage score was obtained from the information questionswas 12.91±2.66. The students who had educationin 2nd grade, had the highest score(12.57±2.38) Whilestatistically a significant difference was found accordingto the age (p=0.002), gender(p=0.006), and the educationgrade (p=0,028), No significant difference was foundaccording to the other characteristics.CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results which were obtainedon (from) our research, it is determined that most ofthe students received education on waste management, the knowledge level of waste management was intermediateand the knowledge level was decreased towardsupper classes. In this context, with intent to increase theknowledge level of the students, it is suggested to maintainall education in every classes, to observe in applicationareas and to plan activities for determination of the situation.
