Abstract
In this study it was aimed to determine acute toxicity of potassium permanganate, used as therapeutic, disinfectant and oxidant in aquaculture and aquariums, on guppy (Poecilia reticulata). In the experiments were used in 126 guppies. The test fish were exposed to following concentrations of potassium permanganate (0.00 mg l^-1, 0. 12 mg l^-1, 0.32 mg l^-1, 0.80 mg l^-1, 2.00 mg l^-1, 5.00 mg l^-1) for 96 hours. The test water have temperature 21±1^0C, dissolved oxygen 8.1 mg l^-1, oxygen saturation 82 %, salinity 0.2 ppt, pH 8, totalhardness 350 mg l^-1 CaCO3 and conductivity 400 μmhos cm^-1 ). All experiments were replicated three times, in natural photoperiod (14 hours light, 10 hours dark), randomly choosen 7 individuals were put to each aquarium. In hourly and daily morphological observations, time of death and number were recorded. In potassium permanganate acute toxicity testing static bioassay method for 96 hour duration were used. The data was analyzed by using probit analysis and 96 h LC50 and EC50 were determined as 0.674 mg l^-1 (95% CI 0.506 to 0.878) and 0.786 mg l^-1 (95% CI 0.558-1.101). During the experiment, depending on the concentration, some side effects of potassium permanganate on fish such as fast-moving, uncontrolled swimming, to escape out of the water, perpendicular movement to the water surface, irregular swimming and fast breathing action were observed. As a result, guppy were found to be more sensitive than many other fish species except on catfish and angel fish. Treatment concentrations should be determined and applied carefully when potassium permanganate used as therapeutic to avoid side effects and causing mortality of fishes.
